Praise for the Haunting of a Duke

"Omg! Could not wait to get back to reading this book every chance I could! Love the love story/fiery romance and mystery all in one! Can't wait to read the next 5 books in the Dark Regency series!" Review

"This story was so good it really deserves more than 5 stars. I was hooked from page one, I love a good HR but this was so much more. Murder, mystery, ghostly goings on, not to mention the sizzling attraction between Emme and Rhys I could not put this story down."Goodreads Review

"Stumbled across this book bought as a freebie some time ago and decided... What the heck, let's read this without researching recommendations.
BEST DECISION EVER!!!
Totally enchanting. The mystery and ghost elements added intrigue without being too spooky for my Christian soul. Lol"
Goodreads Review

"From the first paragraph to the last I was entrenched with this story of love and hauntings."— Review

"A beautiful blend of historical romance with a dash of mysticism, this is not what I was expecting. From page one, we are thrown into a story that is immediately intriguing, spurring questions that demand answers." Review

"What can I say but I really enjoyed THE HAUNTING OF A DUKE. If you like a dark, hot Regency romance with murder and mystery, a brooding, lovable Duke, ghosts (good and evil) and a sweet heroine this book is for you." Review

Communing with spirits has been both gift and curse to Emme Walters. Now it's made her a killer's target. Emme knows why the Dowager Duchess of Briarleigh invited her to a house party--to investigate whether the duke, Rhys Brammel, murdered his wife years ago. But Emme never imagined she would fall in love with the brooding duke.

Branded by society as a possible killer, Rhys is suspicious of Emme and her alleged "gift." Then a late night encounter creates awareness of her other, more attractive, aspects. When Emme's life is threatened, Rhys becomes her protector. Emme and Rhys find passion and peril as they join forces to solve the mysteries at Briarleigh. She made him believe in spirits, but can she make him believe in love?

The Haunting of a Duke is the first of six book in the Dark Regency Series. Each book in this series contains gothic elements, occult or paranormal references, and steamy, open door sex scenes.

While the premise and plot are decent, the style, voice, and poor editing are distracting. This story definitely needed an editor to polish it. The voice is omniscient but switches paragraph to paragraph. One minute you are in the H's head, then the very next line the h's head, and then lo and behold the next line you are in the lead supporting male's head. I wish the author would have stuck with one character for an entire chapter, before switching POVs. Just when you think you have your footing as to whom is even in the room, the scene changes. Days are skipped over. Characters move to different areas without any fluidity as to how they got to the new location. Details are overlooked. Such as clothing that is on, then missing, then suddenly in the way again. The characters get so focused on a relationship and sex that they forget their lives are at stake for a few chapters, despite the fact that they are continually being attacked or inconvenienced with obvious attempts to injure or kill them. It's as if the author took a pause in the story to throw in some sex. I'm all for steamy sex scenes, but this story would have been far better without them. I think this author tried too hard to cram too many concepts and ideas into one story. It reads as if the author sat down, wrote an outline, expanded each idea from the outline, then smooshed them all together with no thought or attention to connecting the sections. (Similar to this rambling review.) There's no need for the random trip to London to make an appearance in society for a week, just to remember that they need to return home and shouldn't have left until they solved two murders (even though they've forgotten that Madame Zuniga's death makes it three murders). Overall, if you are bored with time to waste, are a patient individual, have the ability to gloss over details, and don't have to pay anything to read this story, give it a try. (Note: I only fit two off these categories: the first and last, as this book was free to borrow with Kindle Unlimited. Because I don't fit into the two middle categories, I almost gave up entirely.) If you can accommodate all four categories, proceed to read and enjoy more than I have.

The Haunting of a Duke The Dark Regency Series Book 1 edition by Chasity Bowlin Romance eBooks Reviews

A Gothic ghostly romantic suspense story in the vein of Mary Stewart but with a few detailed sexual encounters thrown in.
Okay, I skip sex scenes so I can't really review those parts but the rest of the book was fantastic. Lots of red herrings and intrigue. A great blend of romance and suspense.
Chasity holds the reader's attention throughout the novel, there's no sagging middle here, and it ends with the promise that you'll learn more about these characters in future novels as she explores the stories of the secondary characters. At least, she better. I need to know what happens.
This was a page turner; I liked the spookiness of the story and also the chemistry between Emme and Rhys. It had some erotic love scenes that were well written. The only thing that wasn't up to par was the editing of the book - the writing had some terrible punctuation in spots and some grammatical errors as well. I hope the next book is edited the way a book should be.

I will look for the next book by Ms. Bowlin; I think this was the 1st paranormal historical romance I've read - I would recommend it.
Initially, I thought this was going to be a five star book. I loved the paranormal elements, the plot and the hero and the heroine. Characterization for secondary characters was very good and the dialogue was reasonably good for a regency. Then, it was as if the author lost her focus.

As some reviewers have noted, there were some continuity issues, not enough to spoil the story, but it was annoying. A few anachronistic words crept in; again, not significant enough by themselves to ruin the story. However, there were two issues which really did lower my rating, and which a judicious pruning would have corrected.

About half way through, the story started to drag, really drag, and this lasted until the conclusion. The story up until that point had been evenly paced, moving along fairly quickly. Then minor storylines popped in and meandered along, not really moving the plot forward. These areas could have been tightened for a much tauter work.

The second issue might be seen as an extension of the slow moving pace. There was too high a ratio of sex to story in the second half. There were too many sex scenes and too many pages devoted to each. They were well written but slowed the story considerably.

For example, the hero and heroine found a diary written by his murdered first wife. This might have held clues as to who murdered her and the hero's sister. It was crucial to read it quickly because the heroine was being targeted by a murderer. Urgent, right? Not so you would notice. In between going at it like rabbits, they perused a few pages here and there. Give me a break. The hero I could see because after all, he was thinking with something other than his brain. But the heroine? If someone were trying to murder me and the clues were in a diary in front of me, I would threaten the hero with loss of parts of his anatomy if he didn't button his flap.

As if this weren't bad enough, let's take a side trip to London to introduce the little lady to the ton and squelch any rumours about being compromised. Hello! Diary! Murder attempts! Clues! I wanted to kill both of them off due to terminal stupidity.

This came close to being a solid four or five star book. It was disappointing to have it start to fall apart half way through. As a result, I am fairly neutral about recommending it. Those who actually prefer a high sex to story ratio might not view it as flawed. So I recommend it with reservations.
